They will compete in a 4x4 relay race where each team has four runners who each run a lap passing a baton to the next runner, a 400-meter sprint and field events, like shot put, javelin and long jump. Its team is comprised of 14 athletes from the school’s special education program and 12 general education students. The coming meet will be the largest event the Jefferson team has taken part in. “It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding,” it states. Unified Sports was created by the Special Olympics to improve social inclusion and physical fitness, according to the group’s website.
